Sacred Athena

Victory Preserved in Clay

A Classical prize amphora with its lid, attributed to a painter of the Kittos Group.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates this terracotta amphora to about 366/365 BCE. Its accession number is 56.171.6a, b, and its attribution is to a painter of the Kittos Group rather than to an individually identified artist.

The museum identifies Athena on the obverse and a footrace on the reverse. Its commentary highlights an inscription naming the archon Polyzelos, whose term of office provides chronological evidence for the vessel’s context.

Unlike an anonymous decorative image, an inscribed object can connect iconography with named civic institutions. Such evidence should be read with the catalogue rather than replaced by a broad symbolic explanation.
