Sacred Athena

Athena and the Games

An Attic black-figure prize vessel, attributed to the Euphiletos Painter, places Athena opposite a footrace.

This terracotta Panathenaic prize amphora is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession 14.130.12. The museum dates it to about 530 BCE and attributes it to the Euphiletos Painter.

The object record identifies Athena on the obverse and a footrace on the reverse. Together they connect the city’s patron goddess with a competitive event in the festival held in her honor.

The vessel offers material evidence for the relationship between religious celebration and athletics. Its painted figures and the museum’s identification should be studied together rather than treating the image as an illustration of any unspecified myth.
