Sacred Athena

Begin Your Study of Athena

Learn to distinguish a poetic source, a historical description, and a modern museum interpretation.

Six lessons introduce the main kinds of evidence used throughout Sacred Athena. Begin with poetry, move to inscriptions and objects, and finish by making a short argument of your own.

Lesson 1 reads two hymns without combining their details. Lesson 2 distinguishes Athena’s images and buildings on the Acropolis. Lesson 3 introduces a priestess through an inscription. Lesson 4 examines a festival vessel. Lesson 5 compares different versions of a myth. Lesson 6 brings a source, an object, and an interpretation together.

Keep a notebook with a separate heading for each lesson. Record the source title and passage or object number before your observations. If you change your mind, retain the earlier note and explain the correction. Learning becomes easier to follow when the route to a conclusion remains visible.

At the end, you should be able to identify an ancient primary source, distinguish a later interpretation from its evidence, describe an object without inventing missing details, and support a short explanation with a traceable reference.
