Pallas Athena

An ancient designation with several explanations

An ancient designation with several explanations

Pallas is one of Athena’s most familiar poetic designations. It appears in the Homeric hymns and throughout later literature. The name can be recognized with confidence even when its origin remains uncertain.

Ancient writers offered different explanations. In the mythographic Library, Athena’s connection with a companion named Pallas becomes part of an explanatory story about the Palladium. Plato’s Cratylus explores a verbal association with movement and the handling of weapons. These are ancient interpretations of a name, not interchangeable proofs of its linguistic origin.

The richness of the evidence is worth preserving. Reading the name in a hymn, a philosophical dialogue, and a mythographic account shows how differently ancient authors could think with the same divine designation.
